Private power poles connect many Sydney homes, farms, commercial sites and strata properties to the overhead electricity network. Private Power Pole Regulations in NSW: Who Is Responsible?
In NSW, a power pole located on private property that supplies only that property is a private pole. The network distributor owns and maintains the poles and lines up to the connection point, while the private pole, its overhead lines and the consumer mains beyond that point belong to the property owner.
This means the owner is responsible for:
- Keeping the pole and its fittings in a safe condition
- Arranging repairs or replacement when a pole deteriorates or is damaged
- Acting on any defect notice issued by Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy within the timeframe stated on the notice

Signs Your Private Power Pole Needs Replacement
Many Sydney properties still rely on timber poles that have stood for decades. Weather, termites, fungal rot and ground movement weaken them over time. Replacement is usually needed if you notice:

Timber, Steel or Concrete: Choosing a Replacement Pole
Most older private poles in Sydney are timber. Replacement options include:
- Timber poles: Lower upfront cost but vulnerable to rot and termites over time
- Galvanised steel poles: Termite-proof, long-lasting and a common choice for residential replacement
- Concrete poles: Very durable, suited to heavier loads and longer spans

Why Private Pole Work Requires a Level 2 Electrician
Private poles and the overhead service lines attached to them form part of the connection between your property and the electricity distribution network. In NSW, this work falls under the Accredited Service Provider scheme, which means a standard licensed electrician cannot legally replace a private pole, disconnect the supply or reconnect it to the network.
